Tom Miller
Biography
Artist Statement:
Since I began exhibiting in 1985 still life painting has been the foundation of my work. Favourite subjects include fruit, fabric, shells, books and pottery. I am also fascinated and inspired by historic art and so about 15 years ago I began including images by artists I admire in some of my paintings.
Recently I have expanded these references to include wrapped images of historic paintings and objects, and trompe-l'oeil studies of famous art. Further developments include using historic artworks as a starting point for improvisations, much as jazz musicians make variations on an old melody to create a new composition.
In this way I am able to pay homage to the great art of the past and by bringing past and present together I hope to entice the viewer to contemplate the way art is the enduring expression of our shared human experience.
