Artwork location: France

This artwork is a striking and bold portrait, captivating in its composition and choice of colors. The central subject is a character with deep blue skin, dressed in a bright yellow coat that contrasts majestically with the pale blue background. The face is adorned with red lips, accentuating the intensity of the expression and adding a touch of mystery and intrigue. The artist displays a great mastery of light and shadow, as evidenced by the gray silhouette of the character projected on the right side of the painting. This shadow gives depth to the work and creates an additional dimension that challenges the viewer. A surprising element of this composition is the presence of bunches of grapes hanging from a branch with green leaves in the upper left corner. This unexpected addition could symbolize vitality, nature or even a certain Eden, inviting various interpretations. Every detail, from the texture of the clothing to the slightly inclined posture of the character, is executed with precision, offering a work rich in visual contrasts and emotions. The harmonious contrast between the bright colours and the darker tones illustrates a poignant duality, making this painting both intriguing and memorable. The work is a perfect example of the artist's creative audacity, marrying conventional elements with a touch of contemporaneity that never fails to captivate and fascinate the viewer.

Adjei Tawiah, Red Berries
Ghana  • 1987

Presentation

Adjei Tawiah was born in 1987 in Accra, Ghana. Graduating from the prestigious Ghanatta College of Art and Design in 2015, he quickly established himself on the contemporary art scene. Tawiah explores human vulnerability through minimalist works that blend painting and mixed media. His work, often centered on the human figure, is distinguished by a subtle use of texture and color. Since his early exhibitions, he has gained international recognition, exhibiting in galleries in Accra, London and Paris, and captivating collectors with his profound and introspective depictions of the human soul.
Lives and works in Accra, Ghana.
Originally from Ghana, Tawiah masterfully uses a distinctive nylon fabric that he aptly named “Sponge Matter.” The material, traditionally used for bathing in his country, serves as the basis for a captivating metaphor focused on healing. Through her art, Tawiah invites us to embark on a profound journey through grief and recovery.
Her vibrant palette emerges as a symbol of the brightness that follows life’s darkest chapters. Each stroke and hue tells a compelling story, inspiring us to contemplate the transformative power of resilience and the light that awaits us beyond hardship.
